Daylight vs. Lantern Light: Returning to the Boone Rail Explorers

Last year, we visited Rail Explorers in Boone, Iowa, for our first rail bike adventure. We rode during the daytime, which gave us a great view of the surrounding farmland, wooded areas, bridges, and the Des Moines River Valley.

We enjoyed the experience so much that we decided to return this year—but with a twist. Instead of another daytime ride, we booked the evening Lantern Tour.

Although we traveled along the same general route, the evening setting made it feel like an entirely new experience.

Our Daytime Ride Last Year

Our first Boone Rail Explorers trip took place during the day. The bright conditions made it easy to see the sweeping Iowa landscapes and take in every detail along the route.

We could see the farmland stretching into the distance, the trees surrounding the tracks, and the views from the bridges. It was peaceful, scenic, and a fun way to experience an area of Iowa that you normally would not be able to explore in quite the same way.

That first ride introduced us to the Rail Explorers experience and gave us a good idea of what the route was like. This year’s Lantern Tour showed us how much the time of day can change the atmosphere.

Watching the Landscape Change at Sunset

One of the best parts of the Lantern Tour was watching the sun slowly set as we traveled down the tracks.

The evening sunlight gave the surrounding landscapes a warmer and more dramatic appearance. The fields, trees, hills, and river valley were lit by the fading sun, creating views that felt completely different from what we saw during our daytime ride.

There were several moments when we simply slowed down mentally and took in the scenery around us. The combination of the evening sky and the Iowa landscape made the trip feel calm and relaxing.

The sunset alone was one of the biggest reasons the evening tour stood out.

Cooler Temperatures Made the Ride More Comfortable

Another major advantage of the Lantern Tour was the cooler temperature.

During a daytime summer ride, the sun and heat can make the experience feel warmer, especially when you are sitting out in the open. By riding later in the evening, we avoided some of the strongest heat of the day.

The cooler air made the ride more comfortable and added to the peaceful atmosphere. It was nice to feel the temperature gradually drop as the sunlight faded and nighttime approached.

For anyone who does not enjoy being outside during the hottest part of a summer day, the evening tour may be the better option.

The Turnaround Area at Night

The turnaround area was another highlight of the Lantern Tour.

By the time we arrived, the area was decorated with strings of lights. The lights created a welcoming atmosphere and made the stop feel like a special part of the evening rather than simply a place to turn the rail bikes around.

It was a great location to relax, enjoy the surroundings, and take a few pictures before starting the return trip.

We do think there is an opportunity to add more to the turnaround experience. A few small activities, refreshments, souvenirs, or other items available for purchase could give riders more to enjoy during the stop.

It would not need to become a large attraction. Even a few simple additions could make the turnaround feel more complete and give guests another reason to spend time there.

Experiencing All the Sounds of the Evening

The sounds were another major difference between the daytime and evening rides.

As daylight faded, we became more aware of everything around us. We could hear insects, birds, wildlife, the movement of the rail bike, and the sound of its wheels traveling along the tracks.

Without as much visual activity competing for our attention, the sounds of nature seemed more noticeable. They gave the evening ride a completely different atmosphere.

At times, it felt peaceful and relaxing. At other moments, especially as it became darker, the sounds added a little mystery to the experience.

Riding Back Through the Darkness

The return trip was probably the most memorable part of the Lantern Tour.

By this point, the sun had gone down and we were traveling through the darkness with our lantern and the headlights on the Rail Explorer lighting the way.

The route that had been bright and colorful earlier in the evening suddenly felt darker, quieter, and more adventurous. Instead of seeing far into the distance, our attention was focused on the tracks and the small area illuminated in front of us.

It was exciting without feeling overwhelming. The lantern and headlights created just enough light to make the ride feel safe while still allowing us to experience what it was like to travel through the Iowa countryside at night.

This portion of the ride was unlike anything we experienced during our daytime tour and was one of our favorite moments of the night.

The Bugs Were More Noticeable

The biggest downside of the Lantern Tour was the bugs.

Because the ride takes place during the evening and the turnaround area is near trees, water, and natural surroundings, the insects seemed more active than they were during our daytime visit.

The string lights also made the bugs especially noticeable around the turnaround area.

One possible improvement would be to treat the area for insects when possible or provide a screened-in space where guests could relax for a few minutes. A screened shelter would allow riders to enjoy the turnaround while getting a break from the bugs.

Anyone planning an evening ride should consider bringing insect repellent and applying it before leaving the depot.

Daytime Ride or Lantern Tour?

Both rides offered something different.

The daytime ride was better for clearly seeing the surrounding landscapes, bridges, and details along the route. It would be a great choice for someone visiting for the first time or anyone interested in photography and daytime scenery.

The Lantern Tour had a more relaxed and atmospheric feeling. The sunset, cooler temperatures, decorative lights, evening sounds, and nighttime return made it feel more like a complete evening adventure.

There were a few drawbacks—especially the bugs and the limited activities at the turnaround—but they did not outweigh everything we enjoyed about the experience.

Final Thoughts

Returning to the Boone Rail Explorers for the Lantern Tour was a great way to experience a familiar attraction from a completely different perspective.

Last year’s daytime ride introduced us to the beautiful route and the unique experience of traveling by rail bike. This year’s evening ride added sunset views, cooler air, string lights, nighttime sounds, and the excitement of traveling back through the darkness with only our lantern and headlights guiding us.

Even though the route was familiar, the change in time and atmosphere made the adventure feel new again.

For a first visit, the daytime tour provides the clearest views of everything along the route. For a return trip—or for anyone looking for something a little more atmospheric—the Lantern Tour is definitely worth considering.

We are glad we had the opportunity to experience both versions, and the Lantern Tour gave us a completely new set of memories from our return to Rail Explorers in Boone.
