The Same Rails — Two Completely Different Experiences

Rail Explorers in Boone, Iowa was already one of the more unique adventures I had experienced, so when I had the opportunity to return for their Lantern Ride, I wanted to see just how different the same route would feel after the sun went down.

During my first visit, the experience was all about the Iowa countryside, open views, bridges, and seeing everything around us as we traveled along the tracks.

The Lantern Ride brought something completely different.

We started while there was still daylight, watched the landscape change as the sun went down, and eventually made our return trip through the darkness with lanterns and headlights lighting the way.

So which one should you choose?

The answer depends on what kind of experience you're looking for.

Day Ride vs. Lantern Ride

Best for: Scenery & Photos

The daytime ride gives you the clearest look at everything along the route.

Some of the biggest advantages are:

• Full views of the Iowa countryside

• Better visibility across the bridges

• Easier photography

• More time to notice details along the route

• A great introduction for your first Rail Explorers experience

Overall feel: Scenic, relaxing, and adventurous.

🏮 Lantern Ride

Best for: Atmosphere & Something Different

The Lantern Ride transforms the experience as daylight fades and the return journey takes place after dark.

Some of the highlights are:

• Sunset and evening scenery

• Cooler temperatures

• Lanterns and headlights

• A completely different atmosphere after dark

• An especially memorable return trip

One thing to consider: bugs were noticeably worse during our nighttime visit.

Overall feel: Atmospheric, unique, and memorable.

The Daytime Experience

My first Rail Explorers trip gave me a chance to experience the route during the day, when the scenery is really the star of the ride.

Traveling by rail bike gives you a completely different perspective than driving through the area. You move slowly enough to enjoy the surroundings, but the experience still feels like an adventure because you're traveling directly along the railroad.

During the daytime ride, you can really appreciate the landscape around Boone. The open countryside, wooded areas, bridges, and views across the valley are easy to take in.

It's also the better option if photography is important to you. There is simply much more available light, and you can see details that disappear once darkness takes over.

For someone experiencing Rail Explorers for the first time, I think the daytime ride is a great introduction to the route.

The Lantern Ride

The Lantern Ride starts with some of the same scenery, but the experience gradually changes as the sun begins to disappear.

That transition was one of my favorite parts of the ride.

Instead of immediately starting in complete darkness, we were able to enjoy the evening light and watch the countryside change as sunset approached.

The lower evening sun created some great views along the route, while the cooler temperatures made the ride more comfortable.

Then came the biggest difference.

By the time we started the return journey, darkness had settled in.

The familiar railroad suddenly felt completely different.

Instead of looking across the countryside, our attention shifted toward the track ahead, the lanterns, the headlights on the rail bikes, and the sounds around us.

Even though we were traveling along the same route, it felt like an entirely different experience.

The Turnaround After Dark

The turnaround area also had a different atmosphere during the Lantern Ride.

String lights and the evening setting made the stop feel more like part of the experience rather than simply the point where the rail bikes are turned around for the return journey.

It was a nice place to take a break before heading back into the darkness.

This is also one area where I think the nighttime experience could become even better.

I would love to see a few more things to do during the stop—perhaps additional activities, refreshments, snacks, or something unique to the Lantern Ride.

The turnaround doesn't need to become a major attraction of its own, but adding another small experience could make the stop feel even more memorable.

Riding the Rails After Dark

The return journey is where the Lantern Ride really separates itself from the daytime experience.

Once you're traveling through complete darkness, you aren't seeing the countryside in the same way anymore.

Instead, you notice the sounds of the rail bike on the tracks, the lights ahead, the darkness surrounding the railroad, and the occasional glimpse of something illuminated along the route.

It's difficult to completely capture that feeling in photographs.

During the daytime ride, the scenery around you is the experience.

At night, the ride itself becomes the experience.

That difference is what made returning for the Lantern Ride worthwhile.

One Downside: The Bugs

There was one noticeable downside to the nighttime ride: bugs.

They were much more noticeable during the Lantern Ride than they had been during the daytime experience.

That's not particularly surprising during a summer evening outdoors in Iowa, but it's something I would definitely keep in mind when planning the ride.

I would recommend bringing insect repellent and being prepared for bugs, especially around areas with lights.

If additional bug-control options were possible around the turnaround area, I think that could make the nighttime experience even more comfortable.

Day or Night — Which One Should You Choose?

I don't think there is a single answer that works for everyone.

Choose the Day Ride If…

• This is your first Rail Explorers experience

• Seeing the scenery is your priority

• You want the best opportunities for photos

• You want clear views from the bridges

• You prefer being outdoors during daylight

Choose the Lantern Ride If…

• You've already experienced the daytime ride

• You enjoy sunset and evening experiences

• You prefer cooler temperatures

• Atmosphere is more important than seeing every detail

• You want something that feels a little more unusual

My Take

If you've never ridden Rail Explorers before, I would probably start during the day so you can fully appreciate the route and scenery.

But if you've already experienced the daytime ride—or you're specifically looking for something with a different atmosphere—the Lantern Ride is absolutely worth considering.

I enjoyed being able to experience both because they didn't feel like simply repeating the same attraction.

The route was familiar.

The experience wasn't.

Here are a few things to know if you're considering your own Rail Explorers adventure in Boone.

Distance: Approximately 12.5 miles round trip

Typical Duration: About 2 hours

Rail Bikes: Electric pedal assist

Ride Options: Tandem and Quad rail bikes

Night Ride Tip: Bring insect repellent.

Weather: Dress for the conditions. Evening temperatures can feel considerably different from daytime temperatures.

Photography: Daytime is much easier for photos. If you're taking photos during the Lantern Ride, make sure your phone or camera handles lower-light conditions well.

Pets: Pets are not permitted on Boone tours.

Final Thoughts

Going back to Rail Explorers for the Lantern Ride showed me how much the time of day can change an experience.

The daytime ride is about seeing the countryside.

The Lantern Ride is more about atmosphere.

During the day, I found myself looking outward at the landscape and taking in the views.

At night, the experience became more focused on the track, the lights, the sounds, and simply moving through the darkness.

I wouldn't necessarily say one replaces the other.

For me, experiencing both was what made the comparison interesting.

If you've already done Rail Explorers during the day and are wondering whether it's worth going back at night, I think the Lantern Ride offers enough of a different experience to make a return trip worthwhile.
